Mix and match is the new matchy-matchy.
When it comes to styling, some of us want to be safe, some want to be bald. Why can’t we have both? Of course we can, if we play it well and there is nothing wrong about “being wrong” in fashion. It’s your style, it’s personal. Have fun!
I had a chance to discover a brand called Neobotanic recently with a concept I personally really like. Basically you pick the print you like and the clothing design/style that please you and then the outcome can be yours in about two weeks. Here in this post, I am going to use it as my examples for mix and match of the colours and prints.
- The Matchy-Matchy Mix and Match
Does this remind you of Cher in Clueless? Is this right or wrong? As I remember at one time when I was little, perfect matching was a wrong wrong in fashion and then the movie, Clueless, came out, matching set suddenly became a new fashion statement. Well, this is fashion and that’s what’s fun about it. It’s always something new coming up and the old might become new new… It’s up to you really to love it or hate it. Here in this outfit, as you can see, the print and colours of the shorts and cropped jacket match each other perfectly. It’s what we call perfect matching.
In the below photo, you are going to see the top more clearly without jacket with the shorts in what normally people call:
- Mix and Match
The top is obviously in the different print from shorts and in different colour combination. But in a way, they go naturally together. Warm colour tone on warm colour tone with black colour print placed evenly on both prints. And if you pay attention on the prints, they both are from natural ingredients like fruits and vegetables. So voila, even the concept of the prints matches each other but just in different design and colours.
I am loving the cut of the top here and for those who are also interested in art and design, the pattern/cut design here and the kind of geometric print is also another matching. And if you want, it can be another level of mix and match. But I am not going to go into that here.
A Purple colour scarf in mustard yellow print, another colour/ print coordinated addition into this total look. As you can see, the base colour pick up the colour of the top while the print matches with the shorts and jacket set beautifully.
A close up of the scarf to show you how beautiful all the colours go together.
Now below is my third kind of mix and match.
- Wrong is Right – have fun
How about let’s just put everything together, whatever please your eyes. Here I was in green on purple(ish) on yellow what some people would call “wrong” but do I care? No, I don’t and well it was me who was wearing it. Make sense?
Another photo of this look. What I like about it is nothing seems to be what you will put together from the first sight but the colours and the shape of the print actually pick up each other. The yellow chilies print on scarf picks up the base colour of the shorts while the base colour of the scarf goes nicely with the green print on the top.
To complete the look, I accessorized with tan colour platform sandals and a python clutch in ecru beige. I just love the texture of the clutch with all these little prints together. And please ignore my horribly pale legs here. It’s because of the bad lighting!! 😛
Finally, thank you for finishing my another blah blah blah.
If you go to Neobotanic, you can see more examples of interesting mix and match of colours and prints and have fun creating your own mix and match!
See you next time then! x
