Yes You Follow Trends Too - yes you follow trends tooRead a post last week about whether following trends would change our style or not. I think this is an interesting thing to write about and trends are not just about fashion. There are so many trends in life, everything have trends basically whether you notice or not. I am not going to go into everything, I will just use the most common things and also important things to me, fashion and foods as examples.

What I find really interesting is I have heard so many times people talking about it is all about style to them, they don’t care about trend. Know what! I am afraid that we all follow the trend whether we admit, care, realise or not. Or you can say you got influenced by trend if that sounds better. There are few types of “trend followers” I have met:

  • People who are crazy about trend. I am sure you have seen lots of these on social media. They all have the same Yosuzi or Maison Michel hat, Isabel Marant or Gucci clothes, Gucci shoes, J.W. Anderson or Gucci bags and etc. (Just some examples.) And head to toe all the latest fashion IT items. The more statement the better, and as many as they can possibly put together.. There are lots of them but perhaps if you are not a regular on social media. You might mistaken them as just one person. Apart from in fashion, in everyday life, there are some people I know have been eating “unhealthy” foods for the whole life until suddenly and very recently that dairy and gluten will kill them.
  • People who got influenced by trend. Most of people I know are this type including me, I believe. We are interested in what’s going on in the world and introduce new things in our life regularly and selectively. In fashion, we shop the trends we like and mix and match with the not trendy at all items we have. We have had different kind of trendy foods, from smoothie, acai bowl, gluten free to kale. But we don’t have to eat these for living. Btw. I personally love gluten free cakes and desserts. They are super yummy.
  • People who got influenced by trend but don’t realise it. I have met lots of people like this too. They are basically same as above, but they don’t know these things are in the trend. They just happen to see them in the shops, supermarkets or restaurants and purchase or order them.
  • People who still got influenced by trend but deny it. As a designer and had worked in fashion for years. I do meet good amount of people especially in this industry who think it is all about style to them. They are the style, they don’t care about trend basically but they know exactly what trends are and influenced by them too. But somehow by acting they don’t care and don’t talk about trends make them feel more superior. There are also some people who believe they are the trend setters. Whatever they like happened to be the trends of the moment. There is nothing they can do about being head to toe in trend. AS IF… and I hope Karl Lagerfeld or those fashion IT girls like Gigi all follow them on Instagram for inspirations. 😀

Ok, I can’t deny that there are some people who live without internet, tv, rarely in contact with any human being who is exposed into all these things then perhaps trends really have nothing to do with them. But well if that is the case, this person won’t be reading this post. And who knows, they might have their own trends locally. 🙂

I respect all types as personal peference though just as my opinion is personal. And there is nothing wrong with trends, I think they make life more interesting and in a way they improve our life one way or the other. Having your trousers got skinnier in the late 90’s and got looser since boyfriend cut became popular in the past 10 years, waistline got lower and now back to higher, perhaps you purchased a few pinkish items in the past two season, or now kale and gluten free items are available in almost all the supermarkets. Do you feel “forced”, loosing your own style or you are a different person after all? To me, no, still the same me. There is nothing wrong with following trends and yes, you do and you are trendy too.

Voila, enough of blahblahblah, the outfit in this post has big puffy sleeves, cropped unhemed jeans in one size up for the looser fit and knotted slippers. All three trends since last year and will carry on this year. I don’t deny this outfit is strongly influenced by trends and quite a head to toe one this time. haha but I am very happy with all these trends in my life!

Really love this post, darling! Such quality topic, and I personally think that my style definitely evolves as time goes by, but I only follow trends when I like em 😀
For example, when flares were in last season – I never bought myself a pair of flared jeans just because I find they don’t suit my body and I also am not a fan of that jean style.

haha I am in contrary … I am flare all the way!! I was probably the only one I know wearing flare during my CSM school time. :P.. ps. thanks for the comment, I have just added “selectively” into my text. agree completely about choosing the right trend than following everything or against trends. :))
