Secondly and the main part of this post is I got lots of people asking me about how to get collaborations especially on IG all the time. I don’t think it is something need to be hurry and definitely shouldn’t jump into anything come to you just to have it. Everyone is different. Some people I know have good collaborations much earlier than the others. They might be really just that good or simply that their styles match the mass commercial market and they blend right in. But one thing I believe we also need to take into accounts is some might have totally different backgrounds to start with. (If life isn’t exactly all fair, there is no exception in social media ok!)
In my case, I am honest with you that I haven’t taken a lot of collaborations and even reduced on quantity myself after the growth of my social media. Even though I don’t think my style blend into that big mass commercial market but if I wanted to, I could certainly have a lot more. For me personally, I started my IG/ blog mainly to share fashion style with my personal approach and things about my everyday life including travel. All the collaborations I have chosen to do match with my direction in social media and blogging. I have certain principles and am very perticular about the images I put on my accounts as well. I say no to several low value gifted proposals because I believe in my works. I also say no if the companies want me to use their ready made images, the companies styles don’t match with mine or I don’t believe their products even if they are paid collaborations. And I don’t want the side products collaborations overpower the main reason I started blogging with… For example, I eat pretty much all sort of meats products, but if what I do most of the time is ads for sausages, bacons, chicken nuggets and etc, and a few of my fashion style posts filled up in between. I seriously would consider that is weird for my fashion accounts. I also believe it won’t do good for my social media future for the long run.
Don’t laugh at my meats collaborations example lol ! Go around IG and check out some of the pretty girlies’ fashion accounts these days yourself if you haven’t noticed. I actually have just discovered myself quite recently after being asked several times about how to get more collaborations. And now I understand why some of you are nervous of not having any or enough. Some accounts do actually have lots of unexpected surprise collaborations going on. Of course it is about personal choice but to answer those who asked me and those who is just starting or still waiting for the first case, seriously, it is not about the quantity, it is about quality and value.
I know some people might have financial pressure especially if they wish to do this as a full time job but don’t have enough support at the back. If you aren’t one of those and you are not Chiara Ferragni who is paid an amazing 5 or even 6 digits Dollars fee a post to promote whatever, is it really worthy for you to fill up your accounts with everything come to you for just a little bit of money or even just to save few pounds for some free products?
I am just at the very beginning of my social media / blogging career if I can already call it a career. I can be totally stupid that I don’t compromise for quick cash or benefits. If I am still hanging there one or two years later, I sure will give you an update whether it is right what I am doing now. Or maybe in few months time, I will just give in and go for whatever come to me and you will see all sort of (for example) saussages or peanuts or screwdrivers posts across all my social media fashion accounts. haha Let’s see. 🙂
